Top Ten Travel Tips for an Epic Myrtle Beach Vacation

You’ve put in a lot of work getting ready for your Myrtle Beach vacation. You earned the time off from work. You set aside the funds for the vacation. You hunted down the best price on your suite at Monterey Bay. So don’t let the details trip you up—you deserve the best beach vacation ever!

We’ve pulled together our top ten travel tips for your Myrtle Beach vacation. Check out our list as your planning your trip, and get ready for a truly epic family vacation.

1. Don’t over-plan.
It’s a great idea to buy your tickets to a couple of Myrtle Beach attractions in advance if you run across a great deal or if you’re concerned about not getting a seat at a popular show, but remember - you’re on vacation to relax! Plan to lose track of time at the beach. Let your kids sleep in or sleep in yourself. You’ve earned it!

2. Always have snacks with you.
Whether you’re in the car, on an airplane, or at the beach, stashing a zipper baggie with nuts and dried fruit in your day pack is never, ever a bad idea. Having hungry kids or even an empty stomach yourself can be a downer, so plan in advance and always have something ready to help you refuel.

3. Remember the sunscreen.
We don’t just mean in the morning. You should be putting on sunscreen every couple of hours. Remember that sunscreen doesn’t last long, especially in situations  where you get sweaty, dirty, or wet—which are pretty much par for the course when you’re at the beach. Look for broad spectrum coverage in at least an SPF 30.

4. While we’re talking self-care: Drink plenty of water.
There is no easier way to make a vacation turn into a nightmare than to let your kids get sunburned and dehydrated. That’s a recipe for grumpiness best avoided. Be sure to pack plenty of water and stay hydrated during the hot days exploring Myrtle Beach.

5. Don’t miss the key attractions.
There are a few places in Myrtle Beach that you really should visit every time you’re in town. The beach comes to mind, but you’ll probably also want to stroll the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk and do some shopping at Broadway at the Beach.

6. Pick a hotel that’s centrally-located.
Here’s the thing: Once you’ve carted your kids and luggage across deserts and valleys to get to your Myrtle Beach vacation destination, we’re pretty sure you will not want to get in the car again. Pick a hotel with a great location (and there’s no point being coy about it – Monterey Bay has a great location) so that you don’t have to get back in the car.

7. Take lots of photos—even of the family photographer.
Don’t let one member of the family hide behind the camera! Remember: You will never be younger than you are right now! Document all of the fun that you are having and take turns playing photographer to make sure everyone gets in on the action.

8. Don’t be afraid to ask about discounts.
AARP? Senior? Military? Plenty of Myrtle Beach attractions and restaurants offer discounts for different groups. It never hurts to ask!

9. Avoid traffic snarls.
Think about arriving on an off-peak day to avoid the heavy beach-bound traffic on Saturdays on Highway 501. You can also consider alternate routes into town –  Highway 22 is one great way to avoid some of the worst congestion, and so is Highway 31. Traveling during the night is also a good alternative and gives the kids a chance to sleep, creating a more calm travel environment for the adults.

10. Leave your pooch at home.
Not only is it exceedingly difficult to find a Myrtle Beach resort that allows pets but dogs aren’t allowed on the beach during peak season. You and your dog will be happier if you find a great place to board or have a friend or neighbor pup-sit.
