Take a Stroll at Brookgreen Gardens

Brookgreen GardensLocated just south of Myrtle Beach in Murrells Inlet, lies the beautiful botanical gardens of Brookgreen Gardens. Stretching thousands of acres through South Carolina’s Lowcountry, this plantation turned garden offers the best in local nature, history, and entertainment.

Protected as a National Historic landmark, Brookgreen Garden’s estate has some of the most magnificent and oldest species of plants. All year long, visitors can walk along the miles of floral-lined paths trailing through the gardens. Take a stroll down Live Oak Alley and stand beneath over 300-year-old Oak trees, or hop on a boat tour and see one of the countries former most profitable rice fields.

In addition to its natural beauty, Brookgreen is also home to the largest and most comprehensive collection of American figurative sculptures in the country. On display along your walk among the trails of Brookgreen are over 1,400 sculptures by artists dating from the early 1800s to the present. Stop to admire the skill and detail of these beautiful, historic masterpieces.

Throughout the year Brookgreen Garden also hosts a number of really great, family friendly events. From June through August, those visiting the gardens can stop and relax beneath the Magnolia’s and Oaks after a day of exploring and listen local music during Brookgreen’s Cool Summer Evenings. This summer concert series is free with admission to the park and also has a number of kids activities to make sure everyone is happy. Or, if you have a little learner in your group, check out the area’s wildlife at the Lowcountry Zoo located on the garden grounds, visit the Butterfly House, set out on the new Children’s Nature and Sensory Trail, and so much more.
